The Tattersalls, who are now numerous in the Burnley district, owned the Holme estate in the ancient parish of Whalley in the 14th century: in the reign of Henry VIII. there was a family of this name at Rigge in the same parish (W. W.). In the 13th century Tatsalle and Tatsal were characteristic Lincolnshire names, and were evidently derived from Tattershall, a town in that county. In Norfolk and Suffolk they were then represented mostly by De Tatishale and De Tateshal (H. R.).
