Teeling Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This is one of the few important families whose leading branches have consistently remained Catholic and still retained a place among the landed gentry. Though not Norman in origin themselves the Teelings came to Ireland following the Anglo-Norman invasion and have been prominent in the life of the country, particularly Co. Meath, through the centuries. Almost every important record — Ormond Deeds, Dowdall Deeds, Justiciary Rolls, Ecclesiastical Registers, Fiants, Inquisitions, Wills etc. etc.-contain references to the Teelings from the middle of the thirteenth century, not only to men of eminence like William, lord of Syddan and the many owners of the Mullagha property, but also to minor clergy and even to gaelicized outlaws. The Syddan family are extinct. All the most notable men of the name were of the Mullagha branch: they include Thomas Telyng (Teeling), who having joined the Rising of Silken Thomas Fitzgerald, was implicated in the assassination of Archbishop Alen for which he suffered torture and death in 1535; the brothers Bartholomew (1774-1798) and Charles Hamilton Teeling (1778-1850), the former hanged as a leading United Irishman, the latter arrested as such but not executed. The Teelings have a distinguished military record in Ireland for which they suffered outlawry and confiscation both in the Cromwellian period and as Jacobites in the next generation, and also abroad, serving as they did in the armies of France and Spain.
Though not a numerous name it is that of a remarkable landed family, the leading branches of which have remained consistently Catholic and pro-Irish throughout the centuries. It was established in Co.
Meath shortly after the Anglo-Norman invasion. SIF 145
