Teitelbaum Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

(German) The date palm tree, a name selected from Psalm 92:12, where it is written, “The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree.”

Dictionary of American Family Names (1956) by Elsdon Coles Smith

(an invented surname) This name is based upon Psalm 92:12, which states, “the righteous shall flourish like the palm tree.” Teitelbaum is “date palm,” in German. Others selected their name from the second half of the verse “they shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon” and took the name Zederbaum (“cedar tree”). Since our forefathers were not expert in botany, some also selected Tannenbaum (“fir tree”) as a reference to this verse.

— Rabbi Benzion Kaganoff
