Tellwright Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from an occupation. 'the tilewright,' a maker of tiles; later, and more generally, a potter, one who bakes and moulds clay. Tilewright seems to be the true form, tigel-wyrhta (Matt) occurring in an Anglo-Saxon Gospel (v. Skeat, s.v. tile). In the York Mystery Plays (Toulmin Smith: Clarendon Press) they are styled Tielmakers or Tillethekkers (i.e. tile-thatchers). In a statute of 1563 they are Tilemakers (5 Elizabeth c. 4-33). In the Potteries the term tilewright is still used, and it is there the surname Tellwright or Telwright has existed for centuries.
