A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

Woulfe ignores the well-known and distinguished English name Tempest and simply gives a Gaelic-Irish form viz. Mac Anfaidh. I presume he had some authority for this: I have not discovered it.* The first of the name I have found in Ireland is Sir Thomas Tempest, who was Attorney-General in 1640. John Tempest was sheriff of Drogheda in 1659; and in the interesting and long drawn out case arising out of the will of Lord Chancellor Eustace in 1665 one Michael Tempest appears as the guardian of the petitioner, Maurice Eustace. The name has attained prominence as the surname of the Marquesses of Londonderry: their real name, however, was Vane to which Tempest was added.

*The pre-Christian Maol Anaithe can hardly be so regarded.

Mac Anfaidh, stated by Woulfe to be the Irish form of this name, is only a modern attempt at a translation.

A Guide to Irish Names (1964) by Edward MacLysaght

This family, who are doubtless of Norman origin, are traced to Roger Tempest, temp. Henry I., who held three carucates and two oxgangs of land in the Shipton Fee, co. York. The name is difficult to account for: it may have reference to some storm which the first bearer encountered. Perhaps Cotgrave's definition of tempeste may help us to its real import: "stormed, blustered, tossed, vexed: hurried, harried, taken or overtaken with, broken or overthrowne by, a tempest."

Patronymica Britannica (1860) by Mark Antony Lower

From the Flemish, Tempst; a personal name.
