The Tepantle surname means 'gathering of rocks piled one on top another', 'dry stone wall'. It comes from two Nahuatl words (the language of the Mexicas), tetl, meaning 'rock', and pantle, meaning 'gathering of things piled one on top another'. The word tepantle is still in use today by the indigenous people of Cofre de Perote mountain of Veracruz. It is used to designate both a small patch of land used to grow mostly corn and the dry stone wall that delimitates it. Pantle is still of common use all over México to say un pantle de tortillas (a bunch of tortillas).
