An Aragonese old name, quite common and distributed by Spain, with special presence in Aragon, Catalonia, Valencia, Murcia, Madrid, La Mancha and Andalusia. The place name comes from Teruel, Aragon, a historical name of a city and capital of the province of the same name. The name comes from the name Teruel Turiolum of pre-Roman origin, possibly derived from the root tur, present in many place names Iberian pre-Roman. Those of this name were found in the conquest and repopulation of the kingdom of Valencia, raising houses in Sogorb (1248), Cocentaina (1269), Xérica (1343), Benafer (1379), etc. They also went to the conquest of Murcia, being residents of Lorca, where was the famous captain Ginés de Teruel, who served the Emperor Charles V with extraordinary courage and remarkable loyalty in many of its most important military enterprises; also sparkled this name in the conquest of Andalusia, and before the Royal Chancery of Granada proved their nobility, among others: García Teruel, neighbor Pliego (Murcia), in 1582, Marcos de Teruel, Sabiote (Jaén), in 1624; Master Sebastian Teruel, Jaen, in 1627, and Fernando Quesada Teruel, neighbor and Albolote Granada, in 1707.
