Teunion Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Five men named Teunion from Turriff and four brothers named Tewnion from Marnoch served in the first Great War, and William Duguid Teunon and James M. Teunon of Turriff were killed (Turriff). These names are corruptions of the name of (St.) Adamnan. Under the effect of aspiration Adhamh, 'Adam,' loses the force of its consonants, and with the diminutive termination added, becomes Aunan, Eunan, etc. In the northeast, as in Aberdeen and Banff, "there is a tendency to prefix certain consonants to saints' names, either as an equivalent for St., or to facilitate the pronunciation. Thus St. Rule becomes Trowel, and St. Anthony Tantan; and hence Eunan becomes Theunan, as in the parish of Aboyne, where a fresh change takes place, and Adamnan's Well and Tree become Skeulan Well and Skeulan Tree" (Adamnan, p. 256).
User-submitted Reference
A very rare Scottish surname derived from the odd shortening process of the sixth-century St Adam, to St Eunam, then to Teunon, and henceforth other variations of the name. This process is particular to the Banff and Aberdeenshire regions of Northern Scotland.
