The Scottish form of English Thatcher. A surname derived from the occupation of thacker (ME. thacker, from Old English þaca, þæc, a roof, thatch + personal suffix -ere), one who covers a roof with straw, reeds, etc., perhaps now an obsolete craft. A few years ago there was an illustration in the Scotsman newspaper of a thacker at work on the roof of Livingstone Tollhouse on the Edinburgh-Glasgow road near Midcalder. Thomas Thekar is mentioned in a list of Aberdeen criminals in 1411 (CRA., p. 4), Cudbert Thekar was a witness in Edinburgh in 1426 (Egidii, p. 48), and John Thekar is recorded in St. Andrews in 1525 (SHR., II, p. 266).

(English) Dweller at the corner where the thatch was stored.
A provincialism for Thatcher. It is used in this seuse by various old writers. "The original meaning of the word ' thack ' is straw or rushes, our Saxon ancestors using no other covering for their houses. Afterwards it was extended to slate and tiles; and he who covered a building, either with these or the more ancient materials, was called a thacker or thatcher." Hallamshire Glossary, p. 162.
From Thacker; so Vieary from Vicar.
Thackray, or Thackwray, or Thackery, is a name that has its present home in the West Riding. Lower says that these names are forms of Thacker or Thatcher, just as Vicary is a form of Vicar. Thomas Thackeray was mayor of Hull in 1604 and 1624 (Tickell's "Hull").
