Marjory Tame in Edinburgh, 1687 (Edinb. Marr.). Gilbert Tame in the parish of Hailes complained against his minister, 1689 (RPC., 3. ser. XIV, p. 78). Lower, Bardsley, and Harrison say this name is local (Oxfordshire), from residence by the river Tame, but the surname in Scotland is more probably from the Tame in the North Riding of Yorkshire.

Richard ancT James Thayn were admitted burgesses of Dundee in 1563 (Wedd., p. 118), Alexander Thaine had a feu of part of the lands of Kynnochtry in 1585 (Scon, p. 225), and Patrick Thain received payment in 1608"for setting up the jebett" (gibbet) in Aberdeen (SCM., V, p. 84). Harrison says from ME. þeg(e)n, "thane." The name of the town of Tain is spelled Tene 1237, Thayne 1255, Thane 1483, Tayne and Tane 1487.
