Marjory Tame in Edinburgh, 1687 (Edinb. Marr.). Gilbert Tame in the parish of Hailes complained against his minister, 1689 (RPC., 3. ser. XIV, p. 78). Lower, Bardsley, and Harrison say this name is local (Oxfordshire), from residence by the river Tame, but the surname in Scotland is more probably from the Tame in the North Riding of Yorkshire.
Now a somewhat uncommon surname but one of some antiquity in the district of Aberchirder. Kyned thainus de Katel witnessed the gift by Duncan, earl of Fife to the nuns of North Berwick, a. 1177 (CMN., 6). Duncan thane of Streuelin (Stirling) witnessed a charter by Gilbert, earl of Strathem, a. 1198 (LIM., p. xxiv), Lome Theine de Ures witnessed a charter by Randulf de Strathphetham, c. 1222 (REB., II, 3), and William Theynus de Kintor appears as charter witness in 1253 (LAC., 84). Patone Thane, "the ald wycar of Innerkethni" was in 1493 one of the perambulators of the boundary of Yochry and Achbrady (RAA., II, p. 276), and David Thane in Strikmartyne was a follower of Campbell of Lundy in 1541 (RSS., II, 3666). Richard ancT James Thayn were admitted burgesses of Dundee in 1563 (Wedd., p. 118), Alexander Thaine had a feu of part of the lands of Kynnochtry in 1585 (Scon, p. 225), and Patrick Thain received payment in 1608"for setting up the jebett" (gibbet) in Aberdeen (SCM., V, p. 84). Harrison says from ME. þeg(e)n, "thane." The name of the town of Tain is spelled Tene 1237, Thayne 1255, Thane 1483, Tayne and Tane 1487.
