Thapa is an ancient Paikela (warrior) rank in the medieval Khasa Kingdom of Western Nepal. Thapa is surname belonging to both Kshetri/Chhetri as well as Magar caste of different ethno-linguistic origin. Magar Thapa are member of Tibeto-Burmese ethno-linguistic society whose language, culture and background is Tibeto-Burmese. While Kshetri /Chhetri Thapa are former member of Khas group, an Indo-Aryan ethno-linguistic group of Indo-Iranian background. Khas Thapas were found in the inscription of Khasa-desa in 12-13th century at Jumla Dara as "Chiramjayatu Dharmabhadra Thapa sukritam" in the reign of Khasraaj Prithvi Malla. Similarly Yasu Thapa, Raj Thapa, Dasu Thapa were also found in inscription of Khasa country dating back to 12-13th century. A clan of these Kshetri Thapa or Khas Thapa known as Bagale Thapa, achieved central power in the year 1806 AD, effectively adminiatered the kingdom of Nepal upto 1837 AD and became member of noble groups with other Kshetri Bharadars. They defended the Kingdom from Anglo-Nepalese war, commanded the wars themselves, ran administration effectively, introduced reforms and built heritages. In the honour of these brave, virtuous and wise Kshatriya Thapa Bharadars, we call them Thapa Kajis, the heroes of Kingdom of Nepal.
