Lord Rendlesham's family are of noble French extraction, and traced to 1328, when Frederick de Thellusson, called Baron St. Saphorin, from his estate near Lyons, accompanied Philip VI. of France into Flanders. His descendants remained in France until the massacre of St. Bartholomew, 1572, when they took refuge at Geneva, from whence, about the middle of the last century, came Peter Thellusson, who, in 1797, made that monstrous will which has enriched the lawyers and astonished Christendom.
