Surnames of the United Kingdom (1912) by Henry Harrison

The name Thirlwell and its variants comes from a place named Thirlwall (Castle,) which still stands as a ruin in Northumberland, England. The castle is located near to the village of Greenhead and is along Hadrian's Wall. Thirl is an Old English word meaning: hole, an opening or breach - in this case a gap in the Roman wall. Over the ages stone has been plundered from the wall to build cottages.
