The castle is located near to the village of Greenhead and is along Hadrian's Wall. Thirl is an Old English word meaning: hole, an opening or breach - in this case a gap in the Roman wall. Over the ages stone has been plundered from the wall to build cottages. My grandmother's family the Thirlwells (Thirlwalls) were reivers disbanded and harassed when the 1707 Act of Union was passed, uniting the Kingdoms of England and Scotland.
