(3) Local, 'of Thore,' i.e. Kirkby Thure or Thore, a parish in Westmorland. Nevertheless.
THOR: From the ON. personal name Thórir from Thórr, the name of the god of thunder. Sometime before 1105 King Eadgar bestowed upon Thor longus, 'the long,' the land of Ædenham (now Ednam), 'unsettled' (desertam), who by his own money cultivated and settled it, built a church and gave it and a ploughgate of land to the monks of St. Cuthbert for the weal of the souls of the king's father, his mother, and brothers and sisters, and for the redemption of his own beloved brother Leswin, and for the weal of his own soul and body (Nat. MSS., I, 14). Thor's expression 'by his own money' (mea propria pecunia) is perhaps 'the first record of the application of capital to land in Scotland.' Thor filius Swan or Suein, ancestor of the old family of Ruthven, appears between 1130-50, as charter witness and as donor of the church of Treuement (Tranent) to the Abbey of Holyrood (RD, p. 12; LSC., p. 11; REG, p. 13). Thor de Trauernent, charter witness and vicecomes, appears about the same time (LSC., p. 8, 9; Kelso, 375; RD, p. 11). Thor the archdeacon was a charter witness, c. 1150 (LSC, p. 11). Under the name Horo the death of the archdeacon is recorded in 1163 (Chron. Holyrood). Willelmus filius Thore witnessed the gift by William de Haya of the land of Ederpoles to the monks of Cupar in the reign or William the Lion (SCM, II, p. 304). Alexander filius Thore was "witness co several royal charters for a short time before 1200. Nothing more seems to be known of him" (Inchaffray, p. 18,269). Stephen filius Thor' witnessed a document concerning the land of Cnoc in Renfrew, 1234 (RMP, p. 180), and in 1273 Stephen filius Ricardi Thor witnessed grants of land by Malcolm, earl of Lennox to the Abbey of Paisley (Levenax, p. 15, 16). Adam Thore, burgess of Edinburgh, 1380 (Laing, 67), may be Ade Thor who held land there in 1400 (Egidii, p. 37).
(Scandinavian) from the Old Norse Thóri-r (Mod. Norwegian Tore), a derivative of Thór-r, the God of Thunder [Old Norse Thór-r = Anglo-Saxon Thúr (occasionally Thór), Thunor-punor, thunder] " Thórr er ásanna framastr”
(Thor is of the gods the foremost).
" Hamo Thor is mentioned in a charter of 1122 as holding half a bouvie of land in Alderney”.—de Gruchy, The Settlement of Norm.(Jersey Soc., 1911), p. 46.
