Thoresen Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

(Norwegian) The son of Thor (the old Norse god of thunder).

Dictionary of American Family Names (1956) by Elsdon Coles Smith

User-submitted Reference

Thoresen simply means 'son of Thore'. It originates from the viking naming tradition which is still very much alive in Iceland.

The ending, -son or -sen, means 'son' (sønn in Norwegian) and is very common all over Scandinavia. In Iceland they also frequently use the ending, -dottir, which literally means 'daughter'.

These days this way of deciding surnames has long since been abandoned and the different -sen and -son endings are used as family names, thus you will find women all over bearing "male" surnames.
