THRIST: The land which had belonged to David filius Thrist was given to the Abbey of Kelso, c. 1174-78 (Kelso, 383). Johnne Thrist was declared innocent of part in detention of King James III in Edinburgh, 1482 (Lennox, II, p. 123), and in 1489 had a remission for his snare in burning the town of Dunbertane and holding the castle against the king (APS., XII, p. 34; Lennox, II, p. 133). Sir James Thrist, a cleric, was witness in Perth, 1547 (Rollok, 44). Harrison explains the name 'bold, brave,' from Old English þrist.
