Tideswell, Domesday Tidesuuelle = Tide’s or Tidi’s Well [the pers. name (with masc. vowel- suff.) is from Old English tíd, festival, season, etc.:— + Old English w(i)ella, a spring] "It is said that the town derived its name from an ebbing well, which still exists, but has long ceased to ebb.” (National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland).—The wonder is that a well which “ebbed” for so long “still exists” ! ‘Tideswell’ was much discussed in Notes & Queries in the early months of 1904.
