Mac Toimilín The name of Mayo family of Cambro-Norman origin, derived from a diminutive of Thomas. SIF 146

A Guide to Irish Names (1964) by Edward MacLysaght

Woulfe describes this as the name of a Welsh or Anglo-Norman family long settled in Co. Mayo.

They certainly settled in Mayo and became completely hibernicized, for they appear in the Mayo Book of Survey and Distribution as “the sept of Tomilins” in the barony of Tirawley, where they were among the papist proprietors in 1641. I do not think, however, that they can be included in the category of those Anglo- or Cambro-Normans who settled in Connacht after the invasion at the end of the twelfth century, because as late as 1600 we find them in Co. Donegal (as the Elizabethan Fiants attest) and very soon after that several of the name were among the followers of O'Donnell when he migrated from Tirconnell to Mayo.

The name in its modern form, Timlin, belongs almost exclusively to Co. Mayo.
