A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

Timmons in Co. Wicklow and Carlow is the modern form of the earlier O'Timon (i.e. Ó Tiomáin), which is on record there in the Tudor Fiants. This is quite unconnected with the family of similar name in Connacht. It should be added that Timmons is now seldom found outside Leinster, whereas Timon (or Tymon) is the form current in Connacht. Some confusion in these names is thus inevitable.
