Timour Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

Timur surname can be from: Azerbaijan, Israel, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Russia, Turkey, USA. Timur, Timor, Timour basis of this surname adapt to the country where they are. Timurski is more common in Poland and Germany for example.

Little known, this name has a long history and gradually disappeared during the Second World War. Jews are among the oldest inhabitants of the various countries that were, at different times, in the Russian zone of influence.

The name 'Timor', 'Timur', 'Timour' belongs to the history of the Jews in Russia, which goes back to the first centuries before the Common Era and continues to this day in the various historical territories of this cultural area, including the Russian Empire.

Beginning in the 19th century, some Jews, including the Jews known as 'Timur', settled legally in Moscow, especially in St. Petersburg and other Russian cities. A large number of Jews joined them illegally. During this century and a half, while facing political persecution and anti-Semitism in this territory, the Jewish community thrived and developed its own theological and cultural traditions, including Hasidism.

However, Timur originated from the European population, the Ashkenazi Jews of Central and Eastern Europe were probably the last to adopt family names. This process began in 1844 in Czarist Russia with the desire to modernize the states in order to tax, conscript and educate the Jews under their rule.

With the advent of the Soviet Union, which succeeded the Russian Empire, the situation of the Jews improved in some respects, but deteriorated in others, due to the violently anti-religious policies of the Soviet government. Several members of the Timur family, like others, died from persecution by the Soviets for not practicing their religion openly.

During the Second World War, the Soviet Union annexed the eastern part of the Republic of Poland and Stalin deported many Jews to the Gulag. Following the Nazi occupation, a large number of Jews were persecuted and deported to concentration camps. Many emigrated to Turkey, Greece, etc. Others who had more means moved to the United States.

After the break-up of the USSR at the end of 1991, the Jews who remained in the Russian Federation sought to reconstitute themselves institutionally, economically, culturally and spiritually. According to the 2002 population census, the Jewish community in Russia numbers 230,000 people, mainly in Moscow (133,700) and St. Petersburg (60,500). Smaller communities live in the Caucasus countries, Ukraine and former Soviet Central Asia.

Due to bureaucratic incompetence and the unwillingness of Jews to register, there are no accurate statistics on Jewish life in the Russian Empire until 1897, when the first census of the entire Empire was taken. The 'Timur' tree and its derivatives

Part of the population was scattered among various communities, including the Romaniotes of Greek culture, and for others, Turkish-speakers in connection with the conversion of the Khazars to Judaism, but more certainly with the Ottoman conquest. They are a minority. Crossing various religions and having a long cultural history, the name ' TIMUR ' meets a real cultural immersion. Indeed, it is Jewish, becomes Orthodox Christian and others later converted to Islam. A branch then remains Ashkenazi Jewish and others convert.
