In 1279 the district of Tyndale is described as "outside the kingdom of England in the Kingdom of Scotland" (Northumberland Assize Rolls, p. 365). William de Tindal witnessed sale of land of Scrwgges to the church of Glasgow c. 1208-13 (REG. p. 76). R. Thyndal, thesaurarius Glasgnensis, 1225 (RMP., p. 212). At various periods we have record of several families of this name in Angus apparently unconnected with each other, but the name has now almost disappeared from the district. One family was long connected with the civic history of Dundee and gave name to Tendal's Wynd there.

The first of the name recorded in Dundee was John Tendall, admitted burgess in 1525 (Wedd., p. 26n, 27). Robert de Tyndale, parson of the church of Graunt Daltone in the county of Dumfries rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 208). Walter Tyndell or Tindell held a tenement in Brechin in 1493, and John Tendale was a witness there in 1552 (REB., I, 233; II, 136). Patrick Tindaill resigned part of the lands of Craigmakeren in 1586 (Scon, 234), David Tindall appears as burgess of Lanark in 1587 (RPC., IV, p. 239), and Cathraine Tindaill was resident in Edinburgh in 1638 (Inquis., 2341).
