From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

TYNINGHAME: From the old barony of the same name in East Lothian. Sometime before 1147 Hugh de Tingheham witnessed a grant by Earl Cospatric to Kelso (Kelso, 288), and sometime after 1165 William de Tiningham witnessed a grant by Serlo, clericus regis, to the same abbey (ibid., 216). Gilbert fiz Henry de Tyningham, tenant of the bishop of Seint Andreu of the county of Edneburk rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 205). Adam de Tyninghame, a canon of St. Andrews, who became dean of Aberdeen and afterwards bishop, died in 1389 (REA., I, p. xxxii-xxxiii). Thomas de Tyningham who witnessed an instrument of concord between the bishop of Aberdeen and John de Forbes, dominus ejusdem in 1391 (ibid., I, p. 189), is the Thomas de Quinnynghame of 1392 and Thomas de Terynghame, canon of Moray, 1400 (REA., I, p. 182,205) and he may be the Thomas de Tenynghame who was described in 1418 as a discreet man, 'discretus vir' (CMN., 28).
