Titchener Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from an occupation. Mr. Lower, quoting Mr. Ferguson, says, 'Dutch teekenaar, a drawer or designer' (Patronymica Britannica). This seems the more probable as the surname is modern in England, and may be the result of immigration.
1575. Henry Tyeknor and Agnes Anderson, widow: Marriage Lic. (London).
1630. Baptised-Michaell, s. Lawrence Ticknor: St. Peter, Cornhill.
1649.-Thomas, s. Thomas Tiekner, grocer: ibid.
1771. Married-Benjamin Tickner and Ann Coles: St. George, Hanover Square.
(English) may be apocopated forms of ‘Titchen-Herd’, i.e. Kid-Herd [v. Titchen]; but the analogy of Buller and Calver seems to show that the second element is really the agential suff. -er; and in any case the meaning is the same.
Lower, 'Eng. Surn.', ii. 43, says: “A village in western Sussex bears the name Itchenor. In the same district resides a family surnamed Titchenor.” This is perhaps worth mentioning, Lower’s idea being that ‘Titchenor’ “is probably a corruption of ‘De Itchenor.’” If he had suggested that the T- of 'Titchenor’ had been “attracted’’ from the preposition ‘at’ it would have been more to the point; but neither case is probable.
TICHENOR: Local. Probably a corruption of At Itchenor, 'T Itchenor, from the river Itchen; the name of a village in Sussex, England.
