User-submitted Reference

This surname is obscure but is definitely English in origin. According to the surname database it is a pre-7th century Anglo-Saxon name deriving from the Old English 'twicene', a topographical term for a crossroads/fork in the road or river. They also attribute Gilbert Thuychene, listed in the 1297 Ministers Accounts of the Earldom of Cornwall as the first recorded ancestor of this name. Whether this is all true it is unclear.

However there are Titchiner's (or variants of the name) visible in the early 15th century. From research the Titchiner's were largely based in East London during the 20th, 19th and 18th centuries, many holding professions as weavers and bootmakers. Though no strong paper links can be made between the early 18th century Titchiner's and the early 15th century ancestors (yet), I have a theory that the TItchiner's moved from West Sussex gradually to London (possibly in the early throws of the industrial revolution) as that was where the work was. However I think the name originates from a small village called West Itchenor, near Chichester. It was not uncommon in the early Middle Ages when surnames were being more widely introduced, especially amongst the lower classes, that people adopted last names from the places they lived or professions they held eg. Taylor, Butcher, Baker, Bradford, Coalville etc. It was also common for a community to name a person who came from another village. So for instance, a Titchiner ancestor who came from West Itchenor to live in Chichester could be known as Alfred of Itchenor. Over time this could have become Alfred Itchenor and warped into the Titchiner derivatives we see today. So I don't think it's too wild a theory to put out there, see what you think!
