In a list of recusants, 1580, presented by the Vicar of Kirkham, Lancashire, appears:
'Also Diev. Tytmouse, conversant in the company of two widows, viz. mistress Alice Clyfton and mistress Jane Clyfton': Croston s edit, of Baines' Lancashire.
The same as Titmuss, Tidmas, Titchmarsh, Tidmarsh; from Tidmarsh co. Berks. The name would also easily corrupt from the ancient name Theodomerus (dux clarus), hodie Dietmar.
Tittmuss: Tittmuss is an old name in Stevenage and Ippolitts (Cus.). It is represented by Titmas in the adjoining county of Bedford, and as Tytemers it occurred in Cambridgeshire in the 13th century (H. R.).
