The personal name, Todaro, is a pet or short form of the first name, Theordore, which in turn is derived from, Theo, meaning 'God', and heron, meaning 'gift'. Thus, the literal translation of this name is 'gift of God'. In Medieval times, parents were encouraged to name their children after saints in the belief that the protection of the saints would be thus rocked. San Teodoro was the name of a saint martyred in America.

This surname can be found throughout Calabria and Sicily. Originally the family of Todaro came from Monte San Giuliano where they are first recorded in the seventeenth century. From Monte San Giuliano branches of the family settled in Palermo and Trapini. The Todaro family held the Bible of Barons of Balia. In 1779 the Bible was conferred on Benedetto Todaro.
