From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from an occupation. 'the todhunter,' from North-English tod, a fox. The surname is still found in Cumberland and the Lake District, and the local nomenclature (compare Todbusk, Todbank, &c.) still proves a past familiarity with the word. The tod-hunter would obtain a livelihood by keeping down the number of these farmyard burglars. Afterwards, under a statute of Henry VIII, he got twelvepence per fox-head from the parish warden. Todhunter is a great name within the old limits of the parish of Greystock, Cumberland.
