From the old lands or barony of Tofts in the parish of Kirkton, Roxburghshire. Ingram de Toftes, Robert de Toftes, and William de Toftes, all three of the county of Roxburghshire, rendered homage for their possessions in 1296. The seal of Ingram bears a large fleur-de-lys and S' Ingrami d'Toftis, and that of Robert an eight-rayed figure and S' Roberti d'Toftis (Bain, II, p. 199,200, 532). William of Toftys was rector of the church of Great Cauerys (Cavers) in 1363 (Melros, p. 434,435), Robert Toftis had a precept of remission for the slaughter of Cristiane Forfar in 1499 (RSS., I, 361), and John Tofts in Cribbis is in record in 1637 (Lauder). Gavin Toftis, resident in the vill of Saltoun, 1641 (Inquis. Tut., 617).
