An uncommon surname that comes from the Cossack lands of Russia where a significant portion of surnames, that ended with -enko, was Russified. At the heart of that last name lays the name (nickname) of a distant ancestor. For this particular last name the most speculated one is "Tonkov". Bearers of that surname belonged to the Cossacks of the Don. Around 70% found in the north eastern parts of Russia, such as Arkhangelsk and Verkhovazhye. It is also found in other parts of Russia and Ukraine. Most of the carriers of that last name have no idea where their family came from or have very little information. This could be because half of Don Cossack population were killed or banished, some went into hiding for a long time and did not pass on their family history.
