This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Toly,' probably a nick, of the immense favourite Bartholomew. Lower writes, 'Tooley, a crasis of St. Olave. Tooley Street in Southwark is so called from its proximity to the church of St Olave.' This is true enough so far as the street is concerned, but it is no help to the elucidation of the surname, which probably existed before Tooley Street was dreamt of. The absence of all prefixes in early registers seems to prove a baptismal origin; v. Tolley. In some instances Tooley may be local; compare.

Richard Tooly was sheriff of the city in 1594, John Tooley was mayor in 1638, and there was a Norwich minister of the name of Tooley in 1677; Bernard Tooley, gent., was buried at St. Michael's church in this city in 1706 (Bl.). There were Tooleys in Boston, Lincolnshire, in the 17th century; the mayor in 1653 bore this name (Thompson's "Boston").
