Toone was the name of an ancient Leicestershire family of Belton and Osgathorpe that branched off at the end of the 16th century from the Toones of Burton - on - Trent, in the neighbouring county of Stafford (N.). Six of the heirs of the Osgathorpe and Belton Toones in the 17th and 18th centuries bore the Christian name of Hamlet (N.). At the beginning of this century William Toone owned a farm in Merill Grange (N.). The name is still in Belton.
