Of local origin from (1) Torrance in Stirlingshire, or (2) from Torrance, East Kilbride, Lanarkshire. John Torrance is recorded in Nethir Cloychtquharne in 1555 (Protocols, I), and John Torrance was a tenant of Newbattle Abbey in 1563 (Neubotle, p. 327), The name also occurs in Edinburgh in 1561 as Torrens (Edinb. Marr.). David Torrance (1840-1906), chief justice of the Supreme Court of Connecticut, U. S., was born in Edinburgh.
Sir Robert Torrens (1814-1884), author of the Australian Torrens Act, which introduced a new system of simplified land title registration and was subsequently adopted by sixty other countries, was born in Cork. The river Torrens, in south Australia, was named after his father, Col. Robert Torrens.
