Gaelic toiseach, EG. toisech, 'chief,' 'leader,' or 'front man.' An ancient Gaelic dignity ranking next to the mormaer. The word is found on a Welsh ogham-inscribed stone as tovisoci, in Welsh tywysog, and on several of the early British coins it appears under the Latin form of Tascio. Symon Tuschech or Tuschecce witnessed two charters by John, earl of Huntingdon in favor of the Abbey of Arbroath, 1219-37 (RAA., I, p. 57, 97). The family of Toschach of Monivaird or Monzievaird in Atholl, now extinct, derived their name from this title, the equivalent of Saxon 'thane.' Andrew Toische resigned into the king's hands his lands of Brewland of Mekven in the county of Perth, 1450, who granted them to the Abbey of Inchaffray (Incnaffray, p. 143-144). About 1502 Finlay, son of Andrew, thane of Glentilt, is mentioned as Finlay Toschach, thane of Glentilt, "and the descendants of this Finlay having, like him, turned their Saxon title of Thane into a Gaelic family designation of Toschach, founded a family called Toschach of Monivaird" (Innes, Legal antiquities, p. 80-81). Finlay Tosscheach of Pitteinze appears on an inquest in Atholl, 1516 (Athole, p. 711), William Toscheoch of Monyvarde was a follower of the earl of Argyll, 1536 (RSS., II, 2152), James Toscheoch witnessed a confirmation charter in favor of David Toscheoch de Monyvaird, 1544 (RMS., III, 3064), and David Toscheocht was witness at Ile of Lochtay, 1552 (BBT., p. 193).
