Touchsstone Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This unusual surname originates from Britain; it occurred sporadically there before becoming extinct. The Touchstone family was brought to Maryland, America in around 1679, by Richard Touchstone, of Ireland. Due to the sparsity of records concerning the name it is not possible to determine the origin of the name. The most likely case is that it is a corruption of Theakston, which is derived form a place in Yorkshire. A possible link between the two names can be found in a Frances Thouckstone, of London (1608.) Domesday records the manor of Tochestone, which represents the village of Great Staughton, in Huntingdonshire; but this name is only recorded in the Domesday book. This example shows how much this surname could have been corrupted. An unlikely possibility is that the name originate from a goldsmith who used as touchstone, a stone used to test the quality of gold alloys.
