Nisbet says the family of Towers of Inverleith descended from Walter Towers, a Frenchman, merchant in Edinburgh in the reign of David II (I, p. 99). William de Tours, vallet of Scotland, was made prisoner in a battle on the March of Scotland, 1359 (Bain, IV, 40). Johannes de Turribus, charter witness in Edinburgh, 1397 (RMS., r, App. I, 157), and John of Touris had a safe conduct in England, 1423 (Bain, IV, 940). John de Turribus was witness in Edinburgh, 1426 (Egidii, p. 47), and David de Turribus ir recorded dominus de Blakburne in the same year (LSC., 119). William de Turribus de Crawmond, 1413 (CDE., 21), William de Towris witnessed a St. Leonard's charter, 1457, and Peter de Towris was witness in Edinburgh, 1462 (Neubotle, 284,290). Thomas Touris, bailie of the barony of Dunkeld within Auchtertool, 1508—13, appears as Towris, Thouris, Towres (Rent. Dunk.). "Schir Alexander Towris off Innerleyth" in record, 1522 (Rental). Dame Jeene or Jonet Towris, a religious of North Berwick, 1539-48 (CMN., 56, 65). George Towris had sasine of land in Haddington, 1558 (ER.), and Sir George Touris was retoured heir of his father, John Touris of Innerleyth, 1605 (Retours, Edinburgh, 153). Toures 1610, Towres 1630, Towrys 1522.
