A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

An estate in the parish of Eccles, co. Lancaster, where the ancestors of the family are said to have been established before the Norman Conquest. The pedigree in Baines's Lancashire deduces them from Ralph de Trafford, who died about 1050. This Ralph may have been a real personage, and an ancestor of the Traffords, but he was certainly no Be Trafford before the Conquest. Mr. Shirley remarks that "on the whole, it may be assumed that the antiquity of this family is exaggerated, though the name no doubt was derived from the locality at an early period." Noble and Gentle Men.
