Probably from some place in the north. There is an Abhainn Traill emptying into Upper Loch Torridon. Hardly likely to be a form of Thrale as suggested by Harrison. Thomas Trayle was canon of Aberdeen, 1366 (REA., II, p. 58). Walter Trail (Trayl, or Treyl, or Treyle), of the family of Traill of Blebo in Fife, was provided bishop of St. Andrews in 1385 (Dowden, p. 27), and Magister Thomas Trayl was a friar of St. Andrews, 1395 (RPSA., p. 5). Sir Thomas Traell, knight of Scotland, had safe conduct into England, 1395 (Bain, IV, 497). Johannes Trayle was elected sergeant in Aberdeen, 1408 (Guildry, p. 185). Thomas Trail was treasurer of Glasgow, 1424 (LCD., p. 242). Thomas Traile was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1443 (NSCM., I, p. 7), and James Trayll de Malgask was a witness, 1448 (REB., I, 118). Thomas Trayll was appointed a procurator to appear in the Roman curia in 1526 (RAA., II, 633), and Thomas Trel was burgess of Dundee, 1576 (Wedd., p. 27). The Traills of Orkney and Shetland are descended from the family of Traill of Blebo, an ancient family of Fife. Their first appearance in Orkney is in 1523 when David Traile appears as witness in Kirkwall (REO., p. 207). The Traills of Castlehill and Rattar, Caithness, are also of Fife origin, Traell 1583, Trayle 1545; Treil. There were lands named Petintreill in the earldom of Sutherland in 1529 (OPS., II, p. 630), in 1616 Pentraill or Pitentrail (Retours, Sutherland, 3).
