From the old barony of the name in East Lothian. Thor de Trauernent (the old British form of the place name) witnessed the charter by King David I to the church of S. Cuthbert in Edinburgh, c. 1127, and c 1144 he witnessed the gift of 52 acres of the land of Dolchet (Dalkeith) to the Abbey of Holyrood (LSC., p. 8, 9). William de Trauernent witnessed a grant by Peter de Grame to the House of Soltre, c. 1190-1238 (Soltre, p, 11), and a later William de Trauernent was "rector scolarum" of Haddington in 1374 (Yester, p. 26).
