From the lands of Traquair in the parish of the same name in Peeblesshire. The surname is and apparently always has been a rare one. Magister Alan de Tracquare witnessed a gift of land in Berwick to the Hospital of Soltre, c. 1250-70 (Soltre, p. 33), and Thomas de Treuequer or Trouequer was decanus de Anegus in 1265 (RAA., I, p. 187,269). Johannes de Traquair had a charter of lands of Edirdye and Henderstoun in the reign of Robert I (RMS., I, App. II, 11). Alexander Traquair, brother german of quondam Thomas Traquair, ypothecarius, burgess of Edinburgh, 1618 (Inquis. Tut., 271). Dr. Ramsey Heatley Traquair (1840-1912) was a distinguished palaeontologist in Edinburgh.
