Since the region of the Palatinate was conquered by the French in the end of the 18th century, it may be possible that the change from Drechsel to Träsel happened when German citizens were registered by French authorities. Indeed, descendants of the family in the city of Lajeado, in the Rio Grande do Sul province of Brazil, hold a conscription certificate from the napoleonic army in which the surname is written as "Träsel".
