Treffry Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Treffry.' Mr. Lower says, 'This name is derived from the manor of Treffry, in the parish of Lanhydrock, where it is traced to a very early period' (v. for fuller account his Patronymica Britannica).
(Celtic) belonging to Treffry (Cornwall) = the Town of the Slope [Cornish and Welsh tref, a homestead, village, town + the Cornish cogn. of Welsh rhiw, a slope]
This name is derived from the manor of Treffry, in the parish of Lanhydrock, where it is traced to a very early period. The family afterwards removed to Fowey, where was born the gallant Sir John Treffry, who, fighting under the Black Prince at the battle of Poictiers, took the French royal standard, for which he was created a knight banneret, and had, as an augmentation of his arms, the Fleursde-lys of France. In the next century some French marauders (whether in revenge of the national disgrace or not, does not appear) attacked Place House, the residence of the family at Fowey, but met a repulse at the hands of a lady, the Mistress Treffry of the period. Leland says :-"The Frenchmen divers times assailed Fowey, and last, most notably, about Henry VI. tyme, when the wife of Thomas Trevry, with her men, repelled the French out of her house, in her husbandes absence, whereupon Thomas Trevry builded a right fair and strongly embattled tower in his house."
