Treloar Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
(Celtic) belonging to Treloar (Cornwall) [Cornish tre, a homestead, etc. + lowr, downward, lower]
According to Pryce, from tre-loar, the moon town; but perhaps from tre-lûar, the garden town.
From Trelow; a location name in Cornwall.
User-submitted Reference
The information from Pryce is partially correct - "garden" is right. The placename first appears in the 14th century and the surname about 150 years later. As a surname it originates from Wendron in Cornwall, and first appears in official parish records as Trelowareth, Wearne baptised around 1573 or 1575. Tre is Cornish for 'homestead' and is a very common prefix paired with a descriptive term - in this instance lowareth, meaning 'garden'. First the w was dropped to make Treloareth, or the e to make Trelowarth, with th or eth subsequently being removed to give the most common variant of the present day as "Treloar".
Most of the Australian Treloars came out as immigrants after the Tin Mining industry waned in the middle of the 19th century. My father, grandfather, great-grandfather etc share the first name of Bennet which was handed down through generations as far back as the 3rd generation of the 1600's, traced back to the original Wearne Trelowareth.
