Trent Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Trent,' a parish in Somerset, near Sherborne.

Gibert de Trent, Somerset, 1 Edward III: Kirby's Quest.

A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

Perhaps from Trent, a parish in the county of Somerset, England. This more likely than that the name is a curtailed form of Tranent. Some of the local references, however, point rather to the latter origin. William Trent was a monk of Cupar Abbey in 1456 (Panmure, II, p. 236), and in 1521 Petrus Trent witnessed a tack by the abbot of the same house (SCM., V, p. 294). John Trent was tenant of the Abbey of Neubotle in 1563 (Neubotle, p. 326), a later John Trent was retoured heir of James Trent in Newbottell, his father, in 1638 and in 1661 William Trent was retoured heir of John Trent, his father (Retours, Edinburgh, 834, 1089). Alexander Trent recorded in Hardeismyllne, 1672 (Lauder), and Mr. Patrick Trent, minister at Linlithgow, was deprived of his benefice, 1689 (RPC., 3. ser. XIV, p. 50). William Trent (c. 1655-1724), born in Inverness, became chief justice of the state of New Jersey, and the capital of the state (Trenton) was named in his honor. His son, also named William, built the first fort on the site of Pittsburgh.

The Surnames of Scotland (1946) by George Fraser Black (1866-1948)

1 Dweller by the River Trent, 12th cent. Trenta, 10th cent. Anglo-Saxon charters Trenta, Traenta, the Treonta of the A.-Sax, Chron. a.d. 924, and the Treanta of Baeda. What the river was called during the Roman occupation is uncertain. Dr. Bradley's ingenious emendation in 1883 of Tacitus’s (‘Annales’, xii. 31) “castris antonam” into “cis trisantonam’’, and his identification of the “Trisantona" thus evolved with the mod. Trent, which seems to have been accepted by Prof. Rhys (‘Celt. Brit.’, ed. 1908, p. 80), cannot be said to be convincing, and are perhaps no longer viewed with favour by their author. In my opinion the name is a survival of the Latin torrent-em (Ital. torrénte), a torrent, in allusion to the famous bore or eagre of the lower part of the river; the 0 of the etymon falling out at an early period owing to the stress being on the second syllable: we may compare the name of the Trenta, a mountain-stream of the Austrian Alps.
