Trevanion Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This important and extensive family derive their name from Trevanion, in the parish of Carhayes in Cornwall, their seat in the reign of Edward II., and probably much earlier. C. S. Gilbert's Cornwall.

Patronymica Britannica (1860) by Mark Antony Lower

TREVANNION, var TREVANION, TREVANNING;: anc. Treuanian and Treuagnian. The name is said to mean a town in a hollow plain or valley (uag, a hollow). Richards (W. Dict) derives Trefannian from tref-annian; from Annian, an ancient proprietor of the land; and he says the tret in Cornwall were for the most part only single houses, and the word subjoined only the name of a Briton who was once the proprietor; thus, Tref-Erbin, Tref-Annian, Tre-Gereus, Tre-Lownydd. There were two Bishops of St. Asaph in Wales, named Anianus or Anian; the first of whom, a Cistercian monk, was consecrated in Nov. 1249, and died in Sept 1266. The name Anian may be from the Brit eniawn, jast; whence Benyon or Banyan, i. e., Ap-Eniawn, son of Eniawn.
