The name is from tre-vylgan, the dwelling of the seaman (vylgy, the sea), according to tradition, and the arms of Sir John Trovylian. The name is also found written Trevilian, Trevillian, Trevillion, Trevylian, Trevyllian, Treuilian, Trivellian. But see Trevelyn.

An Etymological Dictionary of Family and Christian Names (1857) by William Arthur

The name of this family first occurs in the 13th cent. In 1273 Felicia, wife of William de Bodrugan, confirmed to (her son) Andrew, Trevelyan and Cumi, and to Nicholas de Trevelyan her son, Polran. She had been the wife of Nicholas de Trevelyan deceased (Collins, Baronetage). Trevelien was 1086 part of the great barony held by Offels from the Earl of Cornwall. This barony was granted t. Henry II. to Richard de Lucy. Several new families were enfeoffed by him, as Fitz-Walter, Fitz-William, &c. From the arms borne by the family (three bars wavy, in chief a demi-horse issant) it seems not improbable that it was a branch of Tregoz, introduced by Richard de Lucy, which family certainly was settled in Cornwall, and bore three bars, a lion passant in chief.
