A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

There was a prominent family of this name in the north of England. The name may be of local origin as suggested by Lower, ' although the place from which it was assumed has been forgotten." John Trollop had charter from Robert I of the lands of Forteviot in the county of Perth (RMS., i. App. II, 482). Richard Trolhope, claviger, had charter of lands in Neubotel, 1564.

The Surnames of Scotland (1946) by George Fraser Black (1866-1948)

(A. - French - Teutonic) Loiterer; Slattern [Dialectal English and Scot. trollop, from troll, French troler, to stroll; Ger. trollen, to roll, loll: -op prob. represents the adv. up] In the Lanc. dialect (and one or two others) the word has taken a final -s— Aw should as soon think o’gettin’ wed to a co’n boggart as sich a trollops.—Waugh, Sneck-Bant, p. 91.

A ‘William de Trollop’ occurs in a I4th-cent. Durham record. The ‘de’ here is prob. a mistake; if it were not, the second element would represent hope (v. Hope), 'a hollow’, and the first doubtless be the Old Norse troll, ‘an elf’, ‘ogre’, ‘giant’.

Surnames of the United Kingdom (1912) by Henry Harrison

A name of uncertain derivation. A long-standing tradition in the family makes it Trois Loups, in consequence of some marvellous exploit performed by an early progenitor against the wolves which then infested Lincolnshire; but as the name has been spelt Trowlop, Trolop, and Trolhope, I have little doubt of its belonging to the local class, although the place from which it was assumed has been forgotten. See Hope. The family of the baronet are ancient in Lincolnshire.
