This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Trogne.' Peculiar to Yorkshire, so far as I can discover. Trounce, more correctly Trowns (the s as in Jones, Jennings, Williams, Sic.), may be compared with Ellice for Ellis, or Pierce for Piers.—Since writing the above I find Trounson in Devon I have still more recently met with it in Southport, Lancashire.
