The name Tschantré is believed to be the German version of the French names Dechantré or Chantré. These names come from France. The name Chantré comes from the Latin word, cantor, which means 'singer'.

Everyone born as Tschantré is related. They are descended from Heinrich Tschantare (about 1530) and his wife Marielin Perrin. They lived at house named 'Im Bruch' in Tüscherz in Swiss canton of Bern starting about 1555.

The first person who dared to make this great voyage from Switzerland to USA was Johann Jacob (John) Tschantré (born January 9, 1791) and his wife Marianne (née Schlapbach). They left Switzerland on April 1, 1841 with their children, Maria Rosina, Johann Jacob Jr., Johann Alexander and Maria Louise (Mary). They first traveled to Ohio where Johann Jacob Jr. married Anna Weyermann ('Wireman'), also from Switzerland, in Wooster. Their first son Johann Jacob was born on September 22, 1845 in Baron, Wayne County, Ohio and the last name was registered as Jontry. Their descendants have continued this spelling of the name and currently live in the region around Chenoa, Illinois.

Carl Victor (Carlo) Tschantré (born November 3, 1805) served as a member of the pope's Swiss Guard. He then married Margaritha Theresia Vecchione in Salerno on October 6, 1834. They lived in Naples and had two sons, Karl Viktor Franz Paul (Carlo Jr.) (born May 7, 1836) and Franz Paul Hieronimus (Francesco) (born July 17, 1848). Both were baptized in the Chiesa San Carlo all'Arena, with the name spelled Tschantret. Some of the family later emigrated to the USA and now lives in the region around Albany, New York.
