It originates in the 18th century when a Cretan was surnamed after his father, that is, Giannis (Ioannis, Giovanni or Juan). In 1823, Cretan general Kallegis disembarked on Naxos carrying soldiers from Crete to fight in the Greek War of Independence 1821-27; one of the families who moved in Naxos were the Tsounakises.

It originates in the 18th century when a Cretan was surnamed after his father, that is, Giannis (Ioannis, Giovanni or Juan). In 1823, Cretan general Kallegis disembarked on Naxos carrying soldiers from Crete to fight in the Greek War of Independence 1821-27; one of the families who moved in Naxos were the Tsounakises. Later on, the Tsounakis family spread through the Aegean once again and moved to Paros, Chios, Lesvos (a few remain there) and Piraeus.
